If your workbench is a folding table in the garage and your tools live in three different places, you're not alone. Most San Antonio garages end up doing double duty as parking, storage and workshop, and none of those jobs gets done well. A dedicated workshop shed fixes that. Your tools stay set up, your projects stay where you left them, and the car gets its garage back.
At J.B. Woolf Sheds, we've been building custom sheds onsite across San Antonio since 1995. Here's how we help customers plan a backyard shop that actually works.
Start With How You'll Use It
Before you pick a size, think about what happens inside. A woodworker with a table saw and a miter station needs different space than someone fixing small engines or tinkering on weekend projects. Ask yourself:
- What's the biggest tool or project? Long boards need room to feed through a saw. Mowers and motorcycles need a clear path through the door.
- Where will the bench go? Most people want it along the longest wall, under a window for natural light.
- What needs to be stored? Lumber, parts and seasonal gear can go overhead in a loft so the floor stays open.
Picking the Right Size
Workshops tend to feel small faster than any other shed. As a rule of thumb:
- 10′ x 12′: a hobby shop for hand tools, a bench and light projects.
- 12′ x 16′: our most popular workshop size, with room for a full-length bench, a stationary tool or two and storage.
- 12′ x 20′ or 12′ x 24′: serious woodworking, larger equipment or a shop you share with yard storage.
When in doubt, go one size up. Customers almost never tell us their workshop is too big. You can see every size and price in our online quote builder.
Choosing a Style
Our gable sheds are the most common workshop choice: a classic peaked roof, straight walls for shelving and a clean look that fits most homes. Barn sheds add a gambrel roof with extra headroom, great for a storage loft above the shop. For a shop that doubles as a backyard hangout or office, our Hip and Club specialty sheds come with premium house doors, double-pane windows and lifetime shingles. The Hip also includes a heavy-duty 3/4″ floor and studs 16 inches on center as standard.
Workshop Upgrades Worth Adding
Every Woolf shed comes standard with 4x4 pressure-treated runners, floor joists 12 inches on center, Smart siding with a 50-year warranty, 25-year shingles, two vents and a 5-year complete warranty. For a workshop, these options make the biggest difference:
- Floor upgrade: a 3/4″ treated or 3/4″ CDX plywood floor handles heavy tools, rolling carts and dropped parts much better.
- Workbenches: built-in 2′-deep benches in 8′, 10′, 12′ and 16′ lengths, built into the walls during construction.
- Windows: natural light over the bench makes detail work easier. Most shops get one or two 24″ x 36″ windows.
- Ventilation: a ridge vent or 12″ turbine vent moves hot air and sawdust out. In a San Antonio summer, this one matters.
- Loft: overhead storage for lumber and bins keeps the floor clear for work.
- Wooden ramp: roll in mowers, table saws on stands and tool chests without lifting.
- Steel or lite door: a 36″ 9-panel door gives you a lockable everyday entry next to the main double doors.
Planning to add lights and outlets? Tell us at your site inspection where your bench and tools will go, so we can lay out doors and windows to leave room for them.
What It Costs
Pricing depends on size, style and options. As an example, a 12′ x 16′ gable shed starts in the mid $4,000s before options. Add a 12′ workbench, two windows, a ridge vent and a floor upgrade, and most customers land a well-equipped shop for well under the cost of a garage addition. Build yours in the quote builder to see your exact price instantly, with every option itemized.
Permits, HOAs and Placement
Workshop sheds follow the same rules as any backyard building: setbacks from property lines, height limits and, in many neighborhoods, HOA approval. We handle permits and work with HOAs throughout the Greater San Antonio area. If you're not sure what your city or HOA allows, read our guides to building permits in San Antonio and HOA-approved sheds, or just ask at your free site inspection.
Built Onsite, Not Off a Lot
Every Woolf workshop is built on your property by our own crew, not trucked in from a sales lot. That means we can fit it to your yard, match your home's colors and build in your bench, loft and windows exactly where you want them. We're veteran owned and operated, and we stand behind every building with a limited warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best size for a workshop shed?
For most people, 12′ x 16′. It fits a full-length workbench, a stationary tool or two and storage. Go 12′ x 20′ or larger for serious woodworking or bigger equipment.
Can a shed floor handle heavy tools?
Yes. For table saws, drill presses and rolling tool chests, we recommend upgrading to a 3/4″ treated or 3/4″ CDX plywood floor. Our Hip specialty shed includes a heavy-duty 3/4″ floor as standard.
Do I need a permit for a workshop shed in San Antonio?
It depends on the size and your location. Many sheds need a permit, and HOA neighborhoods usually need approval. We handle permits and HOA paperwork for you.
